An Olympic Park That Became a Family Resort
Phoenix hosted the world's best freestyle skiers and snowboarders in 2018, and the mountain still carries that DNA: a proper terrain park, a half-pipe heritage and slopes that top out above 1,000 metres. But the resort's everyday business is Korean families and first-timers — wide beginner runs at the base, a big rental operation, sledding and the Snow Village for children, and the indoor Blue Canyon water park for the day someone in the group doesn't want to ski. Staying on-site matters here: the resort is a self-contained village, and driving in daily from outside costs you the early, empty slopes.

Who It's For
- Families — condos with kitchens, sledding, water park and ski school in one fence
- First-time skiers — gentle base slopes, huge rental stock, lessons on site
- Snowboarders and park riders — the Olympic freestyle terrain is the home turf
- Seoul weekenders — KTX plus shuttle makes a 1-night ski trip realistic

Hotel or Condo? The Real Choice at Phoenix
The resort sells two different stays. The hotel (Sky Hotel) is the serviced option — smaller rooms, daily housekeeping, closest to the lobby restaurants. The condo towers (Sky/Blue/Green condos) are the family play: apartment-style units with living rooms and kitchenettes that sleep four to six, which is why Korean groups default to them. Renovated Sky Royal units on the high floors are the condo sweet spot. Slope-view rooms in either building cost a little more and are worth it in January — watching the night skiing from a warm room is half the fun. Ondol (floor-heated Korean-style) rooms exist in the condo stock; wonderful after skiing, a surprise if you expected beds — check the room name before booking.

Season Timing & Booking Notes
Gangwon-do resorts usually open in late November and run to early March, with the deepest, coldest snow from late December through February. Phoenix runs night skiing on selected slopes, which pairs well with the sauna afterwards. Weekends in January sell out across Pyeongchang — if your dates are a Saturday, book the room first and passes second. On Agoda, look for the resort's winter package rates (room + lift bundles appear in season) and compare against room-only plus on-site pass prices; the bundle usually wins for two or more skiers. Non-skiers should price the Blue Canyon water park day into the plan rather than treating it as an afterthought.

FAQ
Q. When does Phoenix Pyeongchang open for the season?
Typically late November, weather permitting, running into early March. Exact opening dates are announced by the resort each autumn — confirm before booking early-December dates.
Q. Can I rent everything on site?
Yes — skis, boards, boots and clothing are all rented at the resort, and lessons are available. Beginners do not need to buy or bring anything.
Q. Hotel or condo for a couple?
The hotel. Condos shine for groups of four-plus who will use the kitchen; for two people the hotel's service and location are the better value.
Final Verdict
Phoenix Pyeongchang is Korea's most complete single-resort ski stay: Olympic bones, family depth and a water park escape hatch, all at the foot of the lifts. It is a big machine rather than a boutique hideaway — go in expecting a lively resort village and it delivers exactly that.
